It would be easy enough to replace the metal rod with a glass one. 

@Jim Patterson - Seems to be an ingenious implementation of using a wire wound rod to coat with. Cool!

That looks very much like metal.  I fear the results if you try to coat platinum or palladium with it.  Have you tried it?
