On Mac with Safari, I recently started using this:
It seems to work very well, and despite what he says on the
website, I found it very easy to get the hang of.
Hope this helps:

Here's two different ways that work every time:

The first way sounds complicated but is very straightforward. If
you're working on a mac install a utility called [1]Perian. Open
the video you want to download on Youtube in the browser SAFARI.
Then, in Safari, go to the top bar, select "Window" > "Activity,"
a little window will pop up, expand the text that is the video
you want to download from youtube. Next, look to the right where
you see a bunch of numbers indicating file size 3.6 KB, 2.4 KB
etc. Look for one that you can see loading, for example 5.2 of
23.9 MB < This is the file you want to download. Next, select it
and copy it. Now, Go to "Window" > "Downloads." Paste what you
previously copied into this window and your video will begin
downloading immediately. If the video you want on Youtube has a
higher quality, make sure that is selected in the Youtube window
so that your getting the best quality.

Another way is to use the BETA version of [2]MPEG
Streamclip (Version 1.9.3b7) Find the video you want to download
on Youtube, copy the URL. Next, Open Mpeg Streamclip, go to the
top bar, select FILE < Open URL and paste the URL into the box.
>From here you can either download the original file youtube is
hosting, or convert it from its native codec/container into
whatever codec you're editing in, i.e. Prores 422.
