Oklahoma Farmers and Ranchers Association (OFRA) invite at eventbrite.com
Sat Oct 24 21:02:03 UTC 2015

Speaker Topics and Bios:
Richard Teague, PhD is a research scientist with the Texas A&M University System. He will be speaking on "Improving Land Health and the Water Cycle through Managed Grazing."  Dr. Teague uses a systems approach in his research by working with leading conservation ranchers who are able to regenerate ecosystem function and improve their livelihoods. His aim is to determine the extent that livestock producers can use different grazing management strategies to mitigate and adapt to alternative climate change scenarios.  More information about Dr. Teague’s current research projects may be found at: http://vernon.tamu.edu/center-information/faculty-and-staff/w-richard-teague/
Ron Morrow, PhD retired as the state grazing lands specialist with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Arkansas. He will be speaking on "Transitioning to Grass-fed Genetics and Pasture Finishing Cattle." Dr. Morrow presently raises beef cattle and direct markets grass-fed beef (Ozark Pasture Beef).  Ron spent 20 years at the University of Missouri (Animal Sciences Department) where he taught beef cattle production, introductory animal science classes and classes in grazing management.  His research focused on cow-calf management with an emphasis on grazing systems and interactions with body type in cattle.  He and Jim Gerrish developed the Missouri grazing workshops.  Ron also previously worked for the ATTRA project. http://www.ozarkpasturebeef.com
Ann Wells, DVM has more than 25 years experience in veterinary medicine, livestock production, research, education, and business. She will be speaking on "Sustainable Management of Small Ruminants."  Dr. Wells received her DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1980. Her philosophy is to focus on the health of the animal through controlled grazing management and stress reduction. On her own farm she has produced and sold natural lamb and, since 2001, grass-finished beef. She has worked closely throughout her career with others involved in grass-finished and organic livestock production, including ATTRA, Heifer International, and OFRA. http://www.ozarkpasturebeef.com
Tera Biaggi, LCSW owns and operates American Heritage Family Farm with Gary Moyer, MD in North Central Oklahoma. Her topic will be "Trials and Triumphs: Raising Pastured Poultry in Oklahoma." Both Ms. Biaggi and Dr. Moyer were concerned with the number of people presenting in their offices with medical issues-for the most part issues that could be prevented/cured/remedied through proper lifestyle choices, starting with their diet. Gary and Tera humanely produce quality, clean pastured chicken and beef. http://americanheritagefamilyfarm.locallygrown.net
Kim Martin and her husband, Peter, farm 70 acres near Rose, Oklahoma.  Mrs. Martin will inspire us regarding "OFRA: Members Helping Members." She manages the farm while Peter works at a full time job in the Tulsa area.  Several species have been added as they developed their farm.  They raise pastured Large Black hogs, Pastured Corrientes Beef, Katahdin-mix hair sheep, ducks, chickens, and one horse who thinks she’s part of the sheep herd! The Martins were members of NEOLA and then joined OFRA about four years ago. They participated in the Beginning Farmer and Rancher series held at the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in partnership with OFRA and MFSI.  Kim remains active with OFRA, giving and receiving mentoring, driving the Thayer Feed route and managing distribution of feed to OFRA member participants, and hosting on-farm events.Share this event on Facebook
